Some of the chemicals probably do get absorbed by your body. One diet soda a day might not be terrible but a few a day over a period of time is probably a recipe for some major health problems. Cancer, alzheimer's, stroke, etc.
I still drink diet soda sometimes (I've cut way back) because I love it but I've been trying to drink healthier stuff like tea here and there.
