This is a true story.
One day, back in the early 90s, I was over at my friend Bill's house when a conversation kicked up about the phenomenon of religious/spiritual pilgrimages. Another friend of mine, Dave, opined that he thought it odd that Muslims all "flocked to India to go to Mecca and Medina."
Assuming that Dave had simply misspoke, another friend in the room said "You mean flock to Saudi Arabia."
Dave responded, "No! Mecca and Medina are in India."
While a few of us sat there trying to set Dave straight, Bill got up, walked out of the room and returned with an atlas. Bill has absolutely no patience for arguing points of fact with people, so he just opened the book to a map of Saudi Arabia and planted it right in front of Dave.
"Here, look Dave: this is Saudi Arabia -- there's Mecca and there's Medina... case fucking closed, dude."
Dave sat for a while in silence, staring at the map in front of him as though if he just gazed at it long enough, the names on the map (and perhaps geographical reality itself?) would somehow change.
Finally, visibly annoyed, Dave looked up and said -- I shit thee not -- "I'll have to check MY sources."
There's being ignorant, there's being stubborn..... and then there's being Dave. LOL
