Limited trials, in your case, seems to be the way to go... IMO. That is, if you control all the other sites. Forget the $1 or $2.95... give it free and make it "limited". Constantly upsell member. User chooses username and email and next page pre-check the monthly membership (custom form not ccbill) but allow user to click Free Limited Trial as well.
You will get TONS of emails and free accounts and then you start email campaign as well.
Lastly, ccbill is one of your problems right there... you should be using nats.
