Here's the silver lining. I didn't know this but if you owe the IRS money that has accumulated penalties and interest, you can ask them to review your account and remove penalties for any tax year once you've satisfied your balance. I was penalized $5,900 in 2006 when I originally fucked up. I got on the phone with the IRS this morning and they reviewed and removed all the penalties from 2006 so I'm getting a check for $5,900 in a couple weeks.
Even though I paid them a shit load of money, it's nice to see I'm getting at least $5,900 of it back.

I had no idea you can ask for your penalties back... but you have to pay the whole thing off (with penalties) before they give it back to you, right?
Does the state do the same or just IRS?
I am currently paying off the IRS but with a monthly installment agreement. I still owe around $20k.
