In the US, there is a sense of "disenfranchisement" or an "us versus them" mentality. It can be black v white, mexican v. white, poor v. rich, etc etc. So it is easier to start looting when a person feels that it is time to "get mine".

One thing about the Japanese is that they have pride in their homeland. They feel that anything that affects the country affects them and vice versa. Unlike the U.S. where every man, woman, and child are out for themselves first, in Japan it's country first...everything else second. The Japanese, and Asians as a whole, have an honor code that westerners couldn't even start to grasp.
Other than Muslims, which are just fucking outright brainwashed, the Japanese are willing to sacrafice their own lives for their country. And it's not sacrificing as in "you may die if you go to war" but as in "dive your plane into this carrier, you're going to die" type of sacrificing.
