Mostly the roof and the windows. We've got 35 windows and some of them are the original glass.

The problem here is that our houses don't cost much, but we pay out the ass in taxes. Some of the highest, if not the highest in the country.

So say you paid $65k for your almost 4500 square ft of living space, basement and attic...it's really not all that cost effective to put $30k into bringing it up to date. Especially if you're sick of living in the "hood" and don't want your kids to be speaking urban slang by the time they're 5. We'd be extremely lucky to get $20k in added value to the house...any more than that would put it out of the range of the rest of the houses in the area.

The house we live in, my girl bought before we got together. We have a rental property that is a similar house built around the same time. That one, we has been updated mostly due to it being a rental...but it more than pays for itself.

We live in a very strange area for Real Estate - Rochester, NY
