This is a disaster for the Japanese people. No doubt about it.
But it seems to me that the nuclear part of the disaster has overshadowed the effects of the tsunami on the thousands who lost their lives or their homes. But it would do that, because the thought of being affected by nuclear fallout makes wider ranging headlines for newspapers across the world.
There's a high element of selfishness in many people's interest in this, but I don't think you can blame them for worrying about how this may affect them personally. It's just a shame that in the media's race to cover this, some reports are blatantly sensationalist and of no use to anyone.
