This goes all the way back to 1997 when Monica Lewinsky was headline news. Some of the networks stopped talking about it because it was such a sleazy story and they felt it was beneath them to focus on it. The moment they stopped talking about it, the ratings went down. We still like to think TV news has a mission to inform the public and shape debate in the nation.
Bullshit. It's a rating-driven business now. And people whine about how horrible and biased the news is, but the truth that what most people want bright colors and loud noises. That's why Fox has become such a powerhouse. The other news operations are struggling to keep up with fickle public tastes.
