$150 is not something new, they have been doing it for a while. But not only is it $150 but also the change in the fair. Ive had this happen to me where it was cheaper just to buy a whole new ticket.
Most tickets they sell, they lose money on (based on average seat value). Most income from the flight is from freight, food and people buying last minute tickets and business/first class. For any airline to keep getting passengers, they have to stay competitive by lowering prices, so maybe they lower the cost by $5 RT and then they know at least 2 people on that flight will change their flight and they end up making $10.
