In fact in the UK anyone can put any name on their passport (that they're known to people as; you don't have to take any legal or official steps to change your name), so even a man could put a female name if he wanted to. Gender is a different matter though.
As you may know, for a 'tranny' to be legally considered and recognised as female they have to live as a woman for a certain length of time, and probably have medical reports backing up their case. Once they're recognised as female, they would be issued a new birth certificate which enables them to have an F on their passport or any other document, and with their new gender wouldn't be sent to a male prison.
I doubt most 'trannies' in the UK live permanently as women and/or apply to be legally recognised as female though, and they'd be sent to a male prison.
Fairly sure though that, unlike the USA where it seems as soon as they enter a prison every formerly 'straight' guy turns into a homosexual rapist, rape is not commonplace in UK prisons.
It's quite interesting that 'trannies' seem to be quite visible or tolerated in society in Asia and maybe South America yet have poor legal rights, whereas in a country like the UK there is a lot of legal protection and recognition, including marriage rights, but trannies would be a rare and very unusual sight in everyday public life.
