It really doesn't matter. You must defend your trademark or risk losing control of it. The next guys to use it could claim they weren't copying your logo, but that of this player. I'm not saying you have to be a dick or anything, but get some kind of contract specifying how the logo can be used and what recompense you're getting for that particular usage.
On a side note: If I gave away pimproll content for free wouldn't you attempt to sue me?

I see cartoons and drawings of copyrwritten material all the time on goalies helmets, people buy the tee shirts because they like the player, not because they have 'Cujo' on their mask...
