you can find some nice trek's for just about that amount. If you are just riding on the street/path for excersize, get something hybrid. Mountain bike looking, with thinner flatter tires. No need for mountain bike tires.
the FX series from Trek has some nice ones. probably around the 500 range, maybe the 7.2 or 7.3
