I have some ooooold sites that will out convert most new sites in the niche.
The problem is webmasters have an attention span of a goldfish and *think* they know what surfers want, and usually they are so off it's laughable. More people get computers, get credit cards, and turn 18 every single day of the year. Don't forget about these noobs, they are money because they don't know about all the free porn out there.... yet.

I agree and I think one important reason is that the longer a site has been around the longer the webmaster has had to tweak and optimize.
However, a company that makes most of its money through chat sales and card-banging doesn't need old sites, they need new sites that surfers haven't already been burned by and url's that Visa and MC haven't already blacklisted.
