Gaddafi is actually pretty un-Islamic anyway, and his regime is far more Western-leaning than any replacement is likely to be. That is in fact one reason the 'rebels' (Islamic fundamentalists) hate him. He's had problems with Islamist terrorists for a long long time. Take this from 1995, for example, which has a lot of similarities with what's happening now:
