Conspiracy theorists seem to put more effort in though. Take 9/11. What is the official conspiracy theory? 20 guys hijacked some planes, flew them into buildings. That's pretty much it.
You ask most people what happened on 9/11 and they'll say that. They accept it. It's comforting, bad guys did it. And now we punished the bad guys because we're the good guys. Simple. Let's sleep safely at night now.
If you say that elements of the Government had a hand in it, or a foreign or domestic intelligence agency, or even that they just knew about it in advance and turned quite a lot of blind eyes, people act like that's crazy.
And it is. It's a crazy thought to think that a Government can act like that. But history, inside and outside the USA, is filled with insane, diabolical shit Governments have done.
The idea that your own Government or higher forces could even think of carrying out such a crime is too scary and too crazy for most people to believe. I'm not even saying I believe it, probably for those reasons.
I think 'proper' conspiracy theorists are just more prepared to accept that Governments and powerful vested interests will stop at nothing to get what they want. You don't have to believe in green lizards to accept that; in fact that's probably just out there to discredit other conspiracies that are closer to the truth.
Personally I prefer to have evidence to make up my mind, so I don't necessarily come down on one thing or another, I just find a lot of theories very interesting.
Just logically though, and all other things being equal, who is more likely to be able to pull off a major crime like 9/11 against the most powerful nation in the history of the world? The Government/intelligence infrastructure of that country, or 20 guys with box cutters?
If it was that easy, the Soviets really needn't have bothered with all those ICBMs.
