As far as the authorities going through your computer? They do it everyday. They will confiscate your computer and look at what's on your hard drive. Happens all the time.
If it's shown that my IP is downloading and uploading stolen content...then yes they can get my computer and very quickly look at the hard drive and see if I have that content. And they can also find out things I've deleted and what my surfing history is...I've had complete hard drives restored that were completely trashed as far back as 1998. It's not that difficult to find out everything that has ever been on a computer, that's why companies sell encryption software to stop that.
the problem is the hacking tools have increased faster than the security (mainly because of the anti-circumvention clause in the DMCA)

now a days even 3des in commercial wifi routers (keyword based hash) can be cracked in under an hour with a modern laptop.

properly secured 3des has a TTL of 28.65 days.

you need to spend at least 20k on a military grade router to truely protect yourself.

The number of people who realize how insecure a "secured" wireless connection is really quite small.

I would hate to see the number of people who get wrongfully convicted because the common computer "expert" believes their wifi is actually secure.

I'm just saying...the days of us thinking we are web "Masters" and the majority of people are ignorant are way over. Most of the clowns on GFY who think they are "webmasters" have less computer knowledge than today's 12 year old.

i hear you brother it wasn't too long ago that when i pointed out how insecure most networks were, there was an idiot of a webmaster on this board who actually interpreted that to mean there people going around in black vans hacking people secure networks.

What a fucking trailer trash idiot.
Oh wait ....
