It all really comes down to your ability to sell. Telling the surfer "I think this content isn't new, maybe they are rotating it" -- isn't a very strong sales pitch.

No no, I wouldn't tell a surfer the content is rotating... but surfer/fans are even more "informed" or obsessive about their object of desire... and there's forums where they post and compare each other's "latest sources".
I think it's better to overestimate than underestimate, and rely on fresh, new, updated stuff rather than hoping the surfer hasn't seen this or that 2009 gallery.
Even with good rotating members software, you can tell... expired performer content turns sales into one-time events rather than recurring revenue...
