Honestly, I'm surprised you answered the door. If someone was drunk and waving a gun outside I wouldn't answer it, I'd just fucking ignore him till he went away. If he didn't go away or started peeking in the windows I'd call the cops.
I know that may sound pussy, but honestly even though we have arms in the house I have no interest in using them unless someone's breaking the threshold into the home.
The best solution is just to keep your cat indoors. Gun toting drunks aside, keeping kitty indoors keeps him safe from cars, other animals, disease, etc. If you love him don't let him out.
