Without the use or religion as their motivator they would not be able to carry out those wars. The truth is there are very few atheists in foxholes. There are very few in prison as well.
Of course there are atheist everywhere but most of us like our lives too much to risk losing them in a war unless we have a damn good reason and us Vs them isn't good enough.
