A friend of mine came up with a great punishment for his kids. He would make them stand in the corner, facing the corner and hold a book over their heads. Nothing huge,just a typical hardback book. You do that for any amount of time and your arms and shoulders really start to ache. This way they got a little time out and a little pain to remember it by. If they mouthed off while in the corner he would just add time. It seemed pretty effective. His kids are now 15 and 17 and they are two of the nicest, most well mannered, good kids I have ever met.
