On cool places to visit or check out-
Walking-
during the day walk down Chartres st east bound out of the french quarter and into the bywater area, fantastic just to check out the houses.
city park - again during the day, very cool park.
uptown - catch the street car from canal street and go uptown to the river bend, you can also stop off at audobon park to walk around.
french quarter- louis armstrong park - keeps weird hours, was closed for a while but i think its largely open now.
riverwalk during the day - you can start at the end of decatur near esplanade avenue and walk to the ferry terminal to go across to algiers, although theres not a hell of alot in algiers itself, the excursion is pretty cool.
new orleans cemeteries - ask around there are several amazing cemetaries to check out.

and you could check out marie laveau's voodoo museum in the french quarter, its pretty interesting.
