In the event that the shit really hits the fan there's no way in hell that the electorate would turn to that empty headed MILF for solutions.

would happen is that some real contenders, including maybe even some other Democrats, would enter the race at the last minute.

If they didn't think it, they weren't thinking. Carter was about as popular as sour milk by the last year of his administration.
He was even challenged in the Democratic Primary.
That election was Reagan's to lose, and he didn't.
