Yeah things have changed... lol... a lot. You seem to be describing a trade show floor experience, first of all. None of our major industry shows have a trade show floor anymore, and haven't for a while. Shows aren't just about someone trying to sell you a product. They are about networking, making friends, building contact lists, and learning more about the other companies in your industry. Shows are a LOT smaller than they were in 2003, and far more about networking than exhibiting.
It sounds like that sales rep you're ripping was simply trying to see if either 1) you were misinterpreting an opportunity between his/her company and yours, or 2) if you did have it right, why there was no opportunity so he/she might suggest to his/her company ways they could improve to be more useful to people like yourself. There is nothing wrong with that.
Long before I was involved with a show myself, I attended other shows on a regular basis... and almost always came away with something positive. I could go on and on about the benefits of attending shows whenever possible... but suffice it to say that there is a huge benefit for many of us to get a chance to network face to face and get a feel for the people we may or may not do business with. I'd generally much rather do business with people I've met than someone I've never met.
