If you can afford more than shared, you are much better off.
If shared is all you can afford, then just be wise going into it - that we, as hosts, cannot guarantee that somebody uploading a rogue script, or being attacked is not going to adversely affect you too. We do work diligently to minimize these issues, but they are going to be more frequent on a shared box, just by the nature of it's setup.
VPS (VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER) is a very nice compromise between shared hosting and dedicated, and
is a true dedicated environment with full root access for installing scripts, hardening apache, etc.
It will cost you a bit more than shared, but a far cry less than a dedicated box, and the peace of mind you cannot put a price on.
