The public doesn't seem to understand anything besides "the law is the law, and the speed limit is the speed limit" etc.

Public roads are inherently unsafe because the public is on them.

I am german, i have a Porsche and Germany has partly no speed limits. When traffic allows it, i drive 150 mph. It's perfectly legal and i have done it the last 10 years that i have that car without any accident. If someone wanted to change the speed limit in Germany to 55 mph there would be a public revolution.

is it unsafe? judge yourself - the number of deaths in traffic per 1 million people in Germany in 2010 was 45 and in the US 105 (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkehrstod)

the difference probably is: here people are used to it and take more care when changing lanes for example. i have seen some really bad and careless behaviour on US highways - including all those retards that seem to think having a phone conversation or texting is something you should do in traffic.

when we have the same discussions on GFY about guns it's always "it's not the gun, it's the people who kill". it's the same with cars and driving fast.
