Those are kids with special NEEDS and to negate that reality is a torture for them!"
And this is where I stand as well. I have lots of respect for people, and I care about people. Thus, I respect their DIFFERENCES, what makes them PEOPLE instead of NUMBERS. Whether it is they're blonde, black, fat, thin, have some illness or special condition, etc. And that respect includes making jokes about them. The same way I do about EVERYBODY else and the same way I accept people making jokes about me.
Putting people in a ghetto of "good will" is discrimination too. And a very special kind, the kind you can't fight against because... well, they're doing it because of their good and warm heart. So yes, now they're discriminated, their special needs aren't recognized and if you try to integrate them you're close to (or worse than) a criminal

those are just words, and they have the meaning you give them. You can make honeybunny sound like a slur if you use it in the proper context with the proper tone and all.
It's not just that, but we use these words to describe behavior.
So it was handicapped, special, retard, special needs and they were all politically correct at the time. But when we start using them to describe someone acting in that fashion, they suddenly become not ok
Then I can only imagine that 10years from now saying "persons with different abilities" will be a slur as well.
