How much gasoline do you need to protect electric fuel pumps in the summer time?

I always stay above 1/4, because I know that if I run low the pump can suck shit up off of the bottom of the tank and/or overheat

A lot of people tell stories about driving around on E and burning a fuel pump up
Do I need just enough to immerse the pump itself? Or is it "the more the better", where the more fuel I have, the more heat it can absorb?

I don't know whether you can't drive on E because the fuel and tank act as a heatsink or because there needs to be a lot of fuel in there to absorb heat

Do normal people think about these things? Do they bother you?
