That really depends how old the car is. If it's fairly new don't worry about it because most newer vehicles (especially imports) pressurize the tank by a pump forcing air into the tank to push the fuel into the hoses. That way there's less worry about sediment and burning up the pumps.
That's why some cars refuse to start if the gas cap is off or not completely tightened.
