Same reason as food prices. Investors are pouring money into commodities because when currency values are down, you invest in tangible items.
Companies and now even countries are hoarding coffee in huge warehouses to drive the price even higher.
It's the same that was going on with oil. Investors poured money into oil, then instead of taking delivery, they simply sold it to be stored since the price was going to go up anyway.
Basically, the super wealthy are treating everyday commodities like a stock they want to manipulate. The only difference is when they start doing it with food, they are impacting billions of people just so they can make a few extra bucks.
