Unless you have a disease or have serious trouble getting nutrients from your food into your system (you would know, and you should see a doc, normally old age). For normal people, all the B-12 you need will come from your food. Your body doesn't need all that much, it stores what it needs in the Liver and the stuff it can't use it pisses out.
Throwing extra into your blood will only hurt your wallet.
For the most part, B-12 shots are only given to the very old. This is because their digestive system is fucked and can't process enough, thus supplements directly into your blood are helpful.
People doling them out en-mass are just making some cash off your stupidity.

You hardly get any from food - the digestive process destroys most of the B12.
Getting shots gives you a noticeable boost in energy.
