Mostly police can only deputize you in the case of an emergency and it is only temporary, but it may vary depending on the state. What you might be looking more towards is being a reserve police office. To do this you have to apply and then go through an interview process. If you are accepted there is usually a minimum amount of time you have to put in each month, but it is often pretty small like 5-10 hours. That time can be doing ride alongs with the officers or if they have an event you might work traffic or security that kind of stuff.

You will have to go to the reserve academy to learn some basic law enforcement stuff, but reserves carry their guns and can carry off duty as well (at least in my state that might not be the same in all states).
