The bottom line is pretty simple. If we don't raise the debt ceiling it is likely that somebody somewhere isn't going to get paid. That could be means seniors not getting social security. It could mean doctors not getting medicare payments. It could be military not getting their paychecks. It could be bondholders not being paid.
Obama is simply pointing out the situation that best suits him. This way he can stand in front of the people and say, "The republicans would rather seniors go hungry then millionaires pay a few more dollars in taxes on their private jets."
The republicans have painted themselves into a corner here and I think now they are just hoping that Obama. Blinks. He may. He has before. But if not they are going to come out looking pretty badly.
