No, it's not a direct line. The neandertal line died out, but not before some interbreeding with homo sapiens.
Homo sapiens appears to have originated in north africa, and spread out from there to dominate the planet.
We moved north and lived alongside neadertalis for some 40-60K years.
Neadertal was adapted to cold and megafauna and as the earth warmed after the last ice age they went extinct.
