Paul, that's not quite true - the same rule would go for the directors who shoots porn. According your words, such directors are not great - because they don't do feature movies, but shoot dicks and vaginas instead of dramas and action movies. What about Jess Franco and Joe D'Amato ?
I'd say - it's a matter of choice - you can do porn or mainstream.
How to consider someone as great ? In my opinion the greatness comes with the purchases and money.
My conclusion is - the things would be more easy if your hobby is your job - and thus the things are easy. You /not you in person, but anyone/ - so love porn and you know there's money in it - so you shoot porn. Easy - for you, happy clients. But easy don't mean your job should be cheap.
Pussy Lover, the best approach is to "eat everything" - in other words - do both mainstream /if someone like what you do/ ,and adult - there will be clients who would see talent and probably who will pay you the money you want.
