A family friend of ours was charged 20 years later for a crime he didn't commit because his friend said he molested him; he told this to his wife to justify him cheating on her with a guy, she called the cops and he continued the lie so that it didn't look like he intentionally deceived her and was instead a victim himself.
The ages when this was supposedly going down was 18 and 15.
20 years later he had to cop an alford plea and serve a few months because he faced a chance of being found guilty based on the statements of the accuser. A few months was better than chancing a bunch of years.
If that can happen to him -- and we're sure it didn't happen (long story, but people in our family were with him that night) -- surely somebody ACTUALLY doing it can go away.
