For some reason a few of you actually believe this. Please research the competition and and study their SEO strategy. What you will find is a huge variety of high PR and .edu links. Most of them will be from "off-topic" sites. Especially high PR TLD's. Most professional SEO's that I work with spend thousands of dollars gathering these types of links and adding them to their network.

Please guys, READ up on what L.S.I (Latent symantic Indexing), this will help you better understand the theory of having "relevant" content. In a summary, LSI stands

Latent: In the background of the process/not the foreground.
Symantic: Essentially, words. Google uses the words to assign your site to a group. Much like an article directory.
Indexing: The way that google now "categorizes" your site based on it's ONPAGE content. From what I have seen in the serp's since the panda update, is that google places more importance on ON-page factors for L.S.I.

As i mentioned, it would be impossible for google to not count or penalize links that were "off-topic". Example: The link comes from a high pagerank site site like the homepage of twitter. Twitter's LSI category may be "microblogging", however the site it links to has an LSI hash that deals with politics. Do you think that link is still valuable? You bet ya!

For example, I have money sites that have ZERO relevant backlinks. NO LSI. Period. I have these types of sites in the adult, pharma, and gambling niches. LSI is a THEORY that does make sense. However think about a link from google's point of view. A backlink from an off-topic site is a NATURAL occurance on the internet. Site A links to Site B, which passes on the pagerank of site A. Now site B has aquired a portion of the original PR from site A.

Naturally, the more outbound links from site A, the LESS original pagerank will carry to site B, as it is divided between A's outbound links.

Can you imagine how many off-topic sites link to facebook, twitter, gmail, aol, etc? If these links hurt you, and didn't help, would these sites exist in the #1 spots of the serp's?

In closing, as I stated earlier, there "may" be a small bump for a site with ALL symantic links, however in all my years, only small things have changed in the basic google algorithm of Pagerank, Trustrank, and Anchor text. There have been advances in things such as on-page and off-page duplicate content filters, for instance. This is why most SEO's (blackhat anyway) take the time to spin all their text on the backlink page everytime they post one. They aren't worrying if the link is coming from a contextual site, they are more worried about google seeing that page as duplicate content, thus sending the page with the link on it to the Supplemental Index. (The BACK pages of google).

Essentially, google is working on a basic pagerank + trustrank + anchor text calculation. YES even for adult sites. For instance, I am working on a client's site right now, and he is trying to rank for a very difficult adult "kim kardashian" keyword with tons of competition. I have only completed sending him HALF of my "unrelated" links. And he is already ranking at the #15 spot in three weeks. I plan on getting him to the top10 shortly.

I would be happy to answer any SEO related questions. I do realize this is not an SEO forum, thus there may be some questionable theories floating around. I have no control over what a small group "think"...I can only hope to overcome opinion with fact. Google is a machine. A series of mathematical equations that are designed to "organize" the un-organizable. We are lucky to know about the original pagerank forumla at all from the original patent filed by Larry Page. It has been the underlying document in every Seo theory to come about (and there have been many...) I hope I have answered many of your questions.
