What I would have like to have heard was something like this.
My fellow Americans, We are going through a difficult time of our own making. Washington and the people who are elected to solve these problems have lost site of what this country is about.
Here is my plan. I will call the senate to task this afternoon. We will pledge to set election politics aside and do what needs to be done to solve these issues.
I suggest to you that
#1,We need to find a way to generate more revenue for the federal government. To do that I will propose a national !.5% sales tax on everything except food.
#2. I propose a 15% flat tax to everyone. We close all the loopholes and deductions.
#3. I will propose a 2% import tax on all products except food.
Now that we have a plan to increase federal revenue,we will attack federal spending. We will begin with entitlements. I propose we move our federal budget back to where it was in 2008. I propose we reduce military spending by 10% immediately.
I will insist that the congress put a hold on healthcare reform until we have a surplus budget.
Lastly, I will make good on my election promise to work with the other side to solve these very serious problems now.
Barack Obama.
Had we heard anything even remotely close to those words, I would vote for him in the next election. That is what leadership is. Have a plan and the means to implement it.
Not passing blame and making excuses.
