nation-x has it right, big companies have mastered the art of doing less with more. More servers, more development time, more maintenance, more money and less performance.
Corporate types are generally pretty clueless. I just started talking with a manufacturing company about their site. They have a good but plain website done completely in cfm. The have a VERY expensive contract ($30k annually) with a webdev firm in Charlotte, NC who takes care of development, hosting and updating. This site is running on two servers. One IIS server and one mssql server.
I figured they must be pushing some serious traffic, have a massive catalog or something but nope. They get around 5k a day and their site is something I could have done in PHP/mysql in a weekend. Honestly they'd be just fine on a vps somewhere. I'm going to pry them away from their current firm, save them a pile of cash and still make a killing.
