I'd say that if you're dead set on using just the one domain, then go the multisite route using subdomains. And hell, if you plan on starting new sites under different domains.. you can add them into the same multisite installation as well by using the domain mapping plugin.

I know multisite is built in now, but I haven't tried using it in quite awhile. Now that you mention it, maybe I'll see what unused domains I have sitting idle and set multisite up one of those. Might be my best - and safest - plan of action.
