Flash MX uses the same actionscript as Flash 5 few other new functions and functions modified to load external files (mp3, jpg avi etc)..
as a company that respects its clients Macromedia made Flash MX with backward compatibility, so you can use deprecated functions without any problem.
the main difference in MX for a developer is the interface layout and controls. Since Adobe tried sue Macromedia for using the tabs controls in Flash5 (which seems to be Adobe's patent) they changed it in MX with their own controls which are a bit annoying to use first...
other than this Flash MX is the way to go...
