I've followed the Libyan situation from the start. From what I understand, it started after the revolution in Egypt. During the first month or so there were only demonstrations (like you are seeing in Syria now), and the government/Quadaffi was killing protestors at random, because, like Syria, they would rather slaughter all their people before they give up power. It was a while before Nato got involved, and for all the idiots saying "where will the US strike next?" you should know that the United States was of the first counties that did not commit any forces in the beginning. Only then did the armed revolution begin. I'm positively sure Quadaffi would have killed all his people before giving up power.
There were also a lot of criticism that Nato did not get involved earlier.
