Out of jokes, no, not really. Depends where you go, like in any place in the world, but most of Argentina is many times safer than US, even counting by relative numbers. Of course, if you go with your nice iPhone at night in a dangerous place, then you shouldn't blame the place, but yourself
Another thing is that, in general, violent crimes in Argentina are nowhere close to most countries in the world, you might get your wallet stolen by "pungas" but not kidnapped or shot like in Brazil, Mexico or US. This being said, last 5-10 years we have had a raise in violent crimes by very young boys (12 to 18) who are usually high on dope. You better avoid those guys, they're fucking crazy
Brazil is a little more dangerous for sure, that's why most Argentinians tends to go only to very specific places and Brazil police takes care of those places to keep tourism flowing (keep in mind Argentina is the main "provider of tourists" for Brazil)
