Also use microsoft security essentials if you have a legit copy of windows it is free and it is very good.
don't take your pc to a shop what are you friggin kidding guys?? You will get ripped off period and they won't save your data they will almost certainly tell you it needs to be re-installed (totally wiped.) If that is the case might as well do it yourself FREE rather than pay them 100's to do an easy job.

I own a computer shop and we never rip anyone off or nuke & pave (reformat & reinstall windows) unless the customer specifically requests it. If this person was local and brought their computer in to the shop we would charge $55 and have the computer back to them the same day. What you're describing is a craigslist repair monkey or a pizza tech as we call them.
MBAM is fine for simple infections. Google rkill and run that before running MBAM to increase the chances it will be able to find and remove the infection. Combofix is pretty much the go-to tool for decent techs. It's free but will often render a computer unbootable so unless you know how to fix that a good repair shop is your cheapest and safest solution. MBAM can't fix a lot of infections, especially the ones that infect the MBR or act like a physical device. A good tech can manually remove a virus without point and click tools too.
We aren't all out to fuck you, which isn't to say none of us won't. Like any service-based business, there are good ones and bad ones. Read online reviews, ask friends who they recommend and whatever you do stay away from geek squad or any other retailer's repair service. They are overpriced and very often incompetent.
