I disagree. If a person makes enough money to live a typical middle class life they will have a decent amount of money to spend on extra stuff. Those items are what makes companies rich. If there were only very poor people, even if they were told what to buy, their buying power is greatly limited.
If a person makes 50K per year they have a hell of a lot more buying power than someone who makes 15K per year. At 15K per year food and clothing companies will still make bank, but poor people don't buy new $25,000 cars. They don't by Iphones or big screen TVs. They don't take nice vacations. They will spend, but they only have enough to spend on the bare necessities and there is only so much credit that they can get to finance some of the things that they can't afford where someone making 50K has access to a lot more credit to buy a bigger house, a bigger car and all kinds of stuff.
