I think it's way to early to jump to conclusions.
There are many other industries that have their own extensions.
When you look for cheap cruises, you don't get cheapcruises.travel, you get all .coms
When you look for airlines, you don't get airlines.aero, you get all .coms
When you look for jobs, you don't get jobs.jobs, you get all .coms
However,
When you look for US Army, you do get Army.mil
When you look for Stanford University, you do get Standford.edu
When you look for Red Cross, you get RedCross.org
It appears to me that when the search connects the user to a commercial entity, .com still rules the planet. In every case, when I search for something that is education, government, or non profit organizations, you will get the specialty extension, .mil, .edu, .org.
.XXX is a for profit, commercial extension. That's pretty clear.
My

anyhow.
