Affiliate customer support jobs aren't sales jobs per se - sure their efforts should help boost sales, but to expect someone whose job largely consists of helping affiliates with signing up, creating links, link placement, etc to work only on commission is not realistic.

Top sales people often steer clear of commission only jobs. Top sales people expect base + commission. Not simply out of greed, but also necessity - sales vary over time, and more to the point, employers that don't pay a "base" presumably lack confidence in their products selling.
Actually top sales people do go for commission only, it pays better.

We would of taken someone on full time, you misread the post. This is the part I think you misread.

Found a lot of people who simply wanted a slice of what we were getting, they were not interested in a deal based on sales over and above our present ones, guys who wanted a flat wage, guys who were clueless and straight con-men. Got stung by 2 of them. Like some other shooters.
Any deal, full time or part is based on extra sales, not just earning off our present sales. The problem was we never met anyone who could convince us to take them on full time. If you read the boards you'll find the number one complaint with sponsors was the support. Once we met the people and talked with them, we were never convinced enough to take them on full time or part time. All they had were ideas I had heard 100 times before on the boards.

I have no lack of confidence in my product, I had a lack of confidence in the people I was talking to.

Savvy people always look out for #1, themselves, first. Seems to me, based on the limited info you provided, the compensation structure / job expectations was the problem...
Which is what I was doing.

Good sales people don't have time to do day to day customer support, which is what's expected of many affiliate reps.
that was the problem I suspect. The guy we were looking for wasn't looking for a monthly wage, he was earning more as a freelance.

Anyways, rambling on ... if you'd been willing to pay a decent base + commission that would have likely brought some good quality people.
As an affiliate rep or someone to manage the whole site. Sit down with me and shape the site, give it more direction, personality and sales? The affiliate rep job to answer emails and tell affiliates what was where, is easy.

You missed the boat and now trying to reconcile it.
Don't ever think I did, we were on another boat. Changing ships in mid course entirely was a big risk. Never grew on the side of a paysite as nicely as others did, yet a lot better than many did. I met tons of guys who opened sites and failed. But it's nice that you think if I had of changed boats we would of been a huge success. Thanks.

Any savvy business always looks at its environment and plans ahead; evolves to remain relevant.
Agreed. One of the things online never did was look at it's environment out side the online box. I was savvy enough to move part of the business from offline to online.
