Yes, I read about snake bites. Poisenous ones and you only have 1/2 hour.
I think he got bit in the neck. When a cat dominates another cat they usually go for the neck.

Like Mr Pheers said maybe related to an abcess that quickly developed in the throat. That makes sense and is my best guess.
