Not necessarily. In my case, I just accept their requests if I see they belong to certain associations and NGO which I work with, because I can't keep track of everybody's names and they might feel hurt if I deny them. Many times those unknown people was people that I work with on a regular basis and I just didn't remember their names. And I know many people doing the same. Not because they look "cool", but because they use it for networking and business or PR or whatever. What you mention is the behavior or a teenager (and some retards, I admit it), but I doubt people with a brain will really do that to look "cool". Furthermore, if I see someone with 1000 friends, I know for a fact he/she was doing what you say, and it looks extremely lame rather than "cool"
