In fact, this past weekend we created "emergency bags". Most of our town was evacuated due to a huge propane train fire. We were just outside of the evacuation zone, but from friends we learned that they had five minutes to leave the house and so many things were forgotten. Seems the one thing everyone forgot, oddly enough, was cell phone chargers. Anyhows, we have three large bags in the garage, one for each of us, with clothes, boots, jackets, etc etc. I figure every change of season we'll go through them and update them. (I'm anal about stuff like that; I back up my computer every weekend and check my smoke alarms every month on the first of each month.)
I also lived through the loma prieta earthquake. No big deal really, but we went like four days with no power. No power means you can't run out to the local store to buy stuff, so you need to be stocked at home. So we make sure we are always fully stocked with canned goods and water and stuff.
So I'm ready.

Ditto which is why I have my camping trailer packed and ready to go if needed. My Sister just went through the San Diego power thing a couple weeks back and they have their camping trailer in their driveway (omg we sound like Gypsies) with the generator ready to go. Made it easy on the them especially having A/C.
