NOTE: Spoilers below (as if this show could be spoiled)
I thought they did a great job creating multiple plausible worlds and societies, with great detailed settings, and many of the creatures were pretty cool, particularly the non-meat-eaters. But . . .
What kind of fucktard is seeing dinosaurs for the first time and is mostly interested in their personal domestic issues? I think people would at least be like "wow, dinosaurs" first.
There is no explanation as to why the main couple would be together. Their personalities are incompatible and they have different ideas about parenting. She is way brighter and more educated than he is. They are in very different career paths, of a sort which do not usually go together. She disrespects his career. It appears she may have let him do time for another man's child. Other than that, he does not appear to be a good father or a good provider and they don't appear to share any hobbies or interests. AND they do not appear to have any chemistry. If at least they were just crazy hot for each other, that would explain it, but no.
The stuff where the little girl predictably tells the main guy his name is Daddy is eye-rollingly painful to watch.
It is also difficult to feel like it is a big tragedy that some selfish people in the future decided to take extra resources and got in trouble for it. There is all that stuff about how the time travel is a one-way trip, only the leader reports to the home world. These two things I think the writers could write their way out of and have make sense, but they definitely need to be addressed.
This is minor, but the show has continuity errors like the bad girl takes off her top (but not her bottoms) before jumping in the falls. And then her bottoms have just turned into a bathing suit bottom in the next scene. Her wearing a bathing suit, rather than being nude like the son character acted like she was, is one more reason I don't usually watch network TV.
The main actors in the viewpoint could all be either more plausible and/or more attractive.
The actors are doing sitcom level acting, except for the group leaders. The leader in the main camp acts so much better for this type of action SF show that he appears to have wandered in from another show. The sitcom quality musical score just adds to the awful.
Also, the writers are telegraphing too hard. Do the ya think the bad girl's dad is going to turn out to be dead or missing? Do ya think the teenage girl is going to figure out the leader's son's public math problems? Ooh, I can't wait to find out. Only the actress who plays the teenage daughter is so bad that she can barely say the science lines. Nobody thought to test that before casting her?
Some of the homages to great cinema are cute, but this is ultimately really not great cinema.
But, yeah, DINOSAURS! They should make a DVD of just the brontosaurus wandering around and occasionally being fed by a little girl.
